What is a consulting system administrator?

In ‘The Sign of the Four‘ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle described his creation Sherlock Holmes as the ‘only unofficial consulting detective’ and ‘the last and highest court of appeal in detection’. I call myself a consulting system administrator.

There are a lot of sysadmins in the world and we have our personal sets of skills. What I have is a range of experience in:

  • Internet systems
  • corporate services in telecoms and finance
  • System discovery and documentation
  • Site availability
  • Devops
  • System security.

I take pride in being able familiarise myself with new systems quickly, analyse issues and resolve them effectively, either as a one-off job or as a regular commitment. You might not need a system administrator all the time, but I can be there for when you do need one.

If you need to set up a new system, investigate problems with an existing system such as:

  • High server load
  • Site scrapers
  • Security issues and resolutions
  • System monitoring
  • Backups
  • Domain registration
  • Virtualisation
  • Cloud systems

In fact, any of the low level work that is needed to set up and maintain a website or internet service, and want a human but professional approach, get in touch by clicking on the chat icon above, filling in the contact form, or even giving me a phone call.
